Charles Levinson has a good short post about the original relationship between Israel and Hamas. Long before the days of Hamas as Israeli public enemy #1, Israel actually encouraged the formation and spread of Hamas in Palestine. It’s one more reminder of how often governments encourage and promote one group or organization against another because of the current political context without thinking about the possibilities down the road.
On the new blog Informed Comment Global Affairs, Rajeev Pillay discusses the dangers of US’s recent decision to arm Sunni insurgents to fight against al-Qaeda. What do you think those insurgents will do with those weapons after they defeat al-Qaeda, assuming that it even a possibility? I somehow doubt that those Sunni insurgents are then going to start being good Americanized Sunnis.
